How do I formulate logical expressions in equations with variables??

Hi there,

I have a project related to the energy management system. I have some restrictions (equations) for aplliance activations at homes, which must be active according to the free variable. However, variables can not use in $ opeartions. How can I fix this problem? Or do you have any another ideas for me?
