Could Someone Give Me Guidance on GAMS Optimization Techniques for Nonlinear Problems

I hope you are well. I am now working on a project that requires me to solve a series of nonlinear optimization problems with GAMS; and I would appreciate your advice and ideas.

I m working on a multi stage decision making process that requires me to optimise numerous nonlinear objectives while adhering to various restrictions. My specific goals involve reducing expenses while increasing efficiency at various phases of the process.

The choice variables consist of both continuous and discrete alternatives; making the problem highly difficult.

  • I woud want to know about your experiences with the various solvers available in GAMS for tackling nonlinear optimization. Are there certain solvers that you hve found to be more effective for certain types of nonlinear problems? I m especially interested in any suggestions for selecting the best solver based on problem characteristics.

  • Any recommendations on best practices for developing nonlinear models in GAMS would be greatly appreciated. I m especially curious about how to efficiently structure complex limitations and objectives.

  • As I work through model debuggin; I occasionally find it difficult to comprehend solver output and detect potential problems. Do you have any recommendations for diagnosing difficulties with nonlinear models?

Mila,

The questions are very generic and hard to answer in a short time. If you want someone with experience to help you, you might have to reach out to some experts and pay them or gather such information yourself from many different sources. The GAMS documentation including the solver manuals contains a wealth of information but also lots of stuff that is probably irrelevant for your specific needs.

There are some consultants (including GAMS itself) you can pay to get customized answers to your questions. I am afraid that you won’t get much from this forum.
